'Krembo Wings' – Educational Model for Social Integration and Community inclusion

Dorli Rozenshtein, Krembo Wings (Israel)

Abstract

In this abstract we will discuss the application of integration and inclusion principles that have been uniquely developed into a model of action at "Krembo Wings" – a youth movement for children of all abilities (with and without special needs). The term "inclusion" is one of the pillars of the movement and its main catalyst activity.
The concept of the model has various definitions referring to inclusion of people with disabilities. One of them is the right to belong. Krembo Wings employs this concept in all its spheres of activity – starting with implementing the ideology, through defining practices to adjust the environment, methods, conduct, guidance and support, to the special needs of the individual, in order to make him an active and significant partner in the integration process.
Through this abstract we will introduce our definition for Inclusion and Integration, present the implementation of these principles through the activity daily routine and explain the educational approach of "broadening concept" which is an innovative element that is embedded in this model DNA. According to the principle of this approach, we may discard the dictionary definitions of concepts and question the automatic meaning associated with them, thereby changing the widely-accepted indicators used to measure them. For example, a person who is perceived by society as weak is not defined as a capable, independent leader, but may be considered as such if we broaden the meanings of these concepts. The model enables collaborative, accessible and tailored activity that reflects the capabilities of all activists. Due to the changes that this model created towards - "Krembo Wings" gained the status of "Special Advisor" on integration and inclusion by the UN (July 2018).
