A Mnemonic Based Process Flow for Design Thinking

Vineet Raj Kapoor, Chitkara University (India)

Abstract

There are a few versions of the Design Thinking Process Flow. The most acceptable one maybe Define, Empathize, Ideate, Prototype, Test. Of course there are some others out there with different versions of this as well. I had a few issues with the current process flow. A lot of times I come up with solutions without defining the problem. In fact, I felt that an early definition was a constraint. Besides that Test was too closed an ending, which kind of meant that the Prototype made was an acceptable method of solving the problem. There seemed to be no room for iteration though Iteration seemed to be a very important process milestone and not just a way of doing things. Empathy to me also had an issue, since including Empathy in Design Process, kind of accepted the premise that Design was no different that UX Design, since UX holds the User Experience to be it’s Key premise. All said and done, I felt that a new point of view would not be out of place, even if not being sought.
I wanted to synthesize my own design thinking process into this Research Process. At this juncture it may not be out of place to point out that I have a huge love and respect for urdu shayari, and one thing I learnt from it is to put some constraints and try to find solutions inside it (shayari is constrained by beher, qafiya and radeef which kind of brings in the creative forcefully into thinking, that is missing in modern poetry. Also the constraints make it easier for us to remember poetry than non-poetic verses).
Now I truly understand that this thought of mine may find contradiction in my earlier statement about the constraints of the current process. But nevertheless the twain are different as I am putting constraints on myself to define a new process within certain poetic constraints. Coming back to the constraints, I was always intrigued by mnemonics and the art of it. So I wanted to see if I can use mnemonics of Design to deliver a Design Process Flow. So to sum up, I am searching to make an acronym out of the fields of design, that it occurred to me that a mnemonic would be a better way to know and understand the step. So I set about creating an acronym for Design.
My own process to do it shall be described at the end of my paper, since creation of a mnemonic is also a result of the Correct Design Process Flow.
I just hope that these mnemonics can go some way in helping a layman grasp the meaning of DESIGN and follow the process well.
So the final mnemonic is:
DIVERGENCE.EMERGENCE.SYNTHESIS.ITERATION.GENUS.NURTURE.
In the end, I would like to present my ideas in the form of a word cloud. That would allow a better association of the entire process flow. This Poster would also allow Design Thinkers to put this up on their desks!
