Abstract

According to Google Trends during the past 5 years a search for Russian idioms has dropped. This fact is supported by Russian National Corpus which is responsible for monitoring frequency of words used and written. The Corpus revealed that from 2012 there’s a constant decrease in the use of Russian idioms. In this situation the question of how to motivate interest to Russian linguistic legacy among teenagers becomes crucial. The way how we address the problem combines storytelling and edutainment implemented in the format of short audio series produced by the end of 2020. Education part of the series is dedicated mainly to idioms and their origin. Apart from that history, culture and life of Slavic folks is described. In addition, series will briefly touch upon controlling over negative feelings and emotions. Entertainment part is designed as a story of medieval Slavic fantasy universe, where some idioms have magic power and are used as spells. In order to perform a spell the wizard should know the origin of the idiom used and have good control over his\her emotions during the cast. While education part is based on the research of edutainment [1] as well as media current and future contribution to education [2], to develop the story key writings on storytelling are used [3, 4]. The study explores several vectors: 1) who is the audience of such a product (using the method of interviews and focus-groups); 2) How educational content can be implemented in story (case study on the material and plot); 3) How the product can be further developed in terms of interaction and fan community building? We suppose that forming a community with members who are interested in linguistics and philology may help promote interest to idioms and Russian language and spread the knowledge among the younger generation. Although the project is only on the stage of first pilot episode, there is a lot of space for discussion whether this project can be implemented into the school curriculum as additional material within courses of Russian language and literature.

Keywords: edutainment, audio series, idioms, media education.
