Tool Masters or Digital Educators? Reflections on Teachers' Professional Digital Competence Development during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Siw Olsen Fjørtoft, SINTEF Digital (Norway)

Abstract

During the spring of 2020, countries worldwide were in lockdown, and educators faced almost an overnight transformation into online teaching. One year later, has this upheaval led to fundamental changes in teaching? This study addresses different aspects of teachers' professional digital competence development and what impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on such development.  What are the main differences in using digital tools in remote teaching than in an ordinary classroom? How do teachers reflect upon pedagogy and didactics in a digital context? The study is based on a survey conducted among Norwegian teachers in spring 2020 (N=929) and several informal data samplings during the last year.

Keywords: Professional digital competence, remote teaching, K-12.
