Abstract
Despite an overall improvement in Mathematics and Physical sciences National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass rates in South Africa, concerns persist regarding the foundational understanding of these critical subjects. According to recent statistics, while there has been a commendable increase in the pass rates, a substantial percentage of learners continue to face challenges in mastering the fundamental concepts of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. For instance, data from the past academic years reveals that a notable percentage of NSC candidates still struggle with achieving proficiency in these subjects, indicating a need for a closer examination of the factors contributing to persistent foundational gaps. Therefore, this study aims to comprehensively analyse the root causes, challenges, opportunities and potential strategies that can enhance mathematics and physical science education in South Africa. The research objectives include analysing issues from primary education to university readiness, providing a detailed understanding of the multifaceted challenges. To achieve these objectives, the study will adopt a qualitative methodology that involves a holistic approach, combining statistical analysis of NSC results together with an extensive review of educational theories, articles and educational reports. This approach will ensure a thorough examination of the factors influencing low pass rates, which will provide detailed insights into the challenges affecting mathematics and physical science education in South Africa. This study will contribute positively towards the discussions which seek to address the low pass rates in mathematics and physical science in South Africa. It will provide contextual factors, based on educational theories, and ultimately assist educators in implementing strategies that will improve outcomes for these subjects.
