No Place Like Home? A Narrative Literature Review of the Extent to Which Lorella Terzi's Seven Educational Capabilities Can Be Linked to Housing and Housing Inequalities
Louise Nicolson, University of Oxford (United Kingdom)
Abstract
Discussions about housing and the housing market have been at the forefront of UK public consciousness in recent years, and there has also been an increase in the use of the Capabilities Approach to investigate the impact of housing inequalities on the development and well-being of individuals. However, to date there has been dearth of academic literature connecting housing and housing inequalities to Lorella Terzi’s seven Educational Capabilities (ECs), whose acquisition she argues to be essential for achieving positive educational outcomes and flourishing in society. This integrative narrative literature review critically analysed the relationship between inequalities in housing and inequalities in the acquisition of Terzi’s ECs. This study not only robustly evidences such a relationship for six of these seven ECs, but makes important concrete recommendations for potential changes to research, policy and practice that may successfully alleviate the impact of housing inequalities on EC acquisition in contemporary UK society.
