Abstract

The 21st century demands a new paradigm for higher education. To meet the evolving needs of the global job market, universities must equip graduates with critical thinking, adaptability, and technological proficiency.  A recent study by the Federation of Kenya Employers (2023) highlighted a significant gap between the skills demanded by employers and those offered by universities. To bridge this gap, United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) has invested in robust faculty development initiatives. By empowering faculty to adopt innovative teaching methods, such as active learning and technology integration, USIU-Africa has created more engaging and effective learning environments. These initiatives have led to improved student outcomes, including enhanced critical thinking, problem-solving and technological skills. This paper explores the specific strategies employed at USIU-Africa to enhance faculty development. The paper delves into the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing innovative teaching methods. The paper also presents empirical evidence demonstrating the positive impact of these initiatives on student learning, faculty satisfaction and institutional alignment with market demands. By sharing these experiences, this paper aims to contribute to the broader discourse on faculty development and its role in shaping the future of higher education.
