Teaching History to Architecture Students: Bridging the Past and Built Environment
Nouha El-halas, National School of Architecture Oujda (Morocco)
Abstract
The study of history is an essential component of architectural education, providing students with a foundation to understand the evolution of built environments, cultural contexts, and vernacular wisdom. However, teaching history to architecture students requires a distinctive approach that connects historical knowledge to the challenges of contemporary design and sustainability. This presentation explores pedagogical strategies for teaching history in architecture schools, emphasizing active learning, interdisciplinary methods, and the integration of site-based experiences. It also highlights the importance of fostering critical thinking and contextual awareness, enabling future architects to design spaces that are culturally responsive and historically informed.
