Navigating the Shift: An Applied Learning Perspective on Early Childhood Education in Nova Scotia, Canada
Michelle Doucette, Nova Scotia Community College (Canada)
Abstract
Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) has transformed early childhood education (ECE) training to meet the growing demand for professional childcare services, particularly in rural areas where nearly half of Nova Scotia’s population lives. As an early adopter of online vocational training, NSCC launched a virtual ECE program in 2005, combining interactive online modules with mandatory work-integrated learning to prepare graduates for employment anywhere. By leveraging platforms like Moodle, Brightspace, and Padlet, this innovative model has filled industry gaps and inspired similar approaches in other trade and technology programs, making quality education more accessible across the province.
