Proximity: From the Classroom to the Community Space - A Creative Experience in Design

Cristiana Serejo, Instituto de Investigação em Design, Media e Cultura ID+; Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave, Escola Superior de Design, Barcelos (Portugal)

Abstract

This creative experience was developed in an academic context, within the framework of projectbased teaching, during the second year of the Graphic Design degree. The objective was to provide students with the experience of developing a project in a real-world context, focusing on visual identity
design. This was achieved through the connection between the educational institution (Higher School of Design – IPCA), the community cultural entities of Barcelos city, leveraging the students' proximity to the spaces, people, and challenges of these cultural structures.
The project was carried out over an entire semester and was divided into three phases: the first involved research and preparation of the briefing (with visits and interviews with real spaces and people); the second focused on the development of the brand and the applications that constitute the
visual identity (from initial sketches to final graphic solutions); and the third consisted of creating the Standards Manual for the application of this visual identity.
At the end of the semester, the results demonstrated that close contact with real entities enhances students' research, comprehension, and critical analysis skills. It also fosters the development of problem-solving abilities, effectively challenging their creativity in finding innovative solutions.
