Of Elaboration and Explanation
Dibakar Pal, Independent Scholar (India)
Abstract
Elaborate is involving many carefully arranged parts or details. e.g. elaborate security precautions.
Explain is to make something clear or easy to understand by describing or giving information about it. For example: He explained that his life centered on the religious rituals.
Where elaboration ends explanation begins. Elaboration may not satisfy someone but explanation can. It seems explanation is superior to elaboration. Thus all explanation is elaboration but all elaboration may not be explanation.
It seems elaboration is guided by emotion. Emotion has no base and no brake at all. As such it breaks all barriers and crosses all boundaries with its uncontrollable force.
In contrast explanation is guided by motion. Its every step is based on logic. Here assumption or guess has no room. It gives clarification without any doubt or ambiguity. Its opinion is crystal clear.
Someone is satisfied by elaboration. Someone is satisfied by explanation. Explanation needs greater intellect. Since intellectual persons are numbered explanations can only be had from few persons. The world is infested with lay persons. As such an elaborator has greater number of followers than an explainer.
Elaboration is long. It is dilute in nature. Man elaborates as per his sweet will. If an emotional heart is detached from mundane existence then elaboration sails for an infinite voyage. As such it may be full of rubbish. It may signify nothing. It is merely wastage of time. It stands for quantity. Quantitative judgment falls within the purview of elaboration.
Explanation is unique. It is singular in nature. All explanations are not different but they are presented differently. It is like: All roads lead to Rome.
An ordinary student writes. A good student also writes. The examiner examines the answer scripts of both and opines that a good student does not write different thing, he writes differently. The good student represents uniquely. His way of representation possesses rare individual style which is quite commendable and isolates him from common students. He is noted for his uncommonness. In fact an ordinary student elaborates. A good student explains.
