IDEAL Mobile App as a Tool for Inclusive Language Learning: Insights from Teachers and Immigrant Students

Abstract

This research examines the role of IDEAL Mobile Application as an additional aid in the language learning process of immigrant students in Turkey, Spain and Greece. The research attempts to look at the perceptions of educators and immigrant students using the IDEAL App as mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) is on the rise, especially among learners who do not have resources necessary to traditional classrooms. With a qualitative phenomenological research approach, data was gathered through semi-structured interviews from 37 immigrant students and 14 teachers. The results suggest that IDEAL App positively impacts the development of passive language competencies, increases learners’ motivation, assists in non-formal as well as flipped learning, and supports intercultural communication. The app’s functionalities and ease of use were acknowledged particularly in underserved areas. Nonetheless, there were also responses regarding functionalities such as limited features, distraction, and decreased interactions personally. This study shows that aside from being helpful, the IDEAL App is inclusively designed for language acquisition among immigrant students; however, its effectiveness needs to be maximized through diverse educational landscapes.
