Abstract

Even though CALL offers numerous benefits and opportunities, there are several challenges that educators and institutions may face when applying, promoting, and enhancing CALL practices that might include infrastructure and access, training and professional development, technical support. pedagogical integration, content selection and quality, assessment and feedback, motivation and engagement, research and evidence-based practices and norms under rigorous scrutiny to adopt good decision-making capabilities.

Addressing these challenges requires collaboration among educators, institutions, policymakers, and technology providers. By investing in infrastructure, offering training opportunities, providing technical support, and promoting research in the field, CALL practices can be effectively applied, promoted, and enhanced to support language learning and teaching.

Some of the impediments halting or derailing the programme cycles might include a paucity of funding for research and development, difficulty in finding appropriate software and hardware, resistance to change from traditional teaching methods, lack of training for teachers on how to use CALL effectively apart from the difficulty in assessing the effectiveness of CALL programs.

Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts among language educators, educational institutions, policymakers, and technology developers. By providing adequate support, training, and resources, promoting research and innovation, and addressing issues of access and equity, CALL practices can be effectively applied, promoted, and enhanced to benefit language learners worldwide.

CALL introduces new opportunities and challenges in assessing language learning outcomes. Traditional assessment methods may not be fully applicable or appropriate for evaluating learners' performance in technology-mediated environments. Developing reliable and valid assessment approaches specific to CALL is necessary to accurately measure learners' progress and proficiency levels. While technology can enhance learner motivation and engagement, it can also present distractions and competing interests. Ensuring that CALL activities are designed to promote active participation, interactivity, and meaningful engagement is crucial with ample provisions for timely feedback and supervised support.

The availability of a vast range of digital resources can be both a benefit and a challenge in the sense that the proliferation of low-quality or inappropriate materials widely being used in general could jeopardise the very prospects of the enjoyable learning experiences.

It is essential to integrate CALL tools and activities in a pedagogically sound manner, aligning them with language learning goals and instructional strategies. Developing appropriate pedagogical frameworks and guidelines for CALL integration is crucial to maximize its effectiveness.

Technology is constantly evolving with the emergence of new tools and platforms posing newer challenges for language educators to keep up with the latest developments and select the most appropriate and effective CALL tools.
