Reimagining the Student Experience through Engagement, Rigor, and Support
Ana De Jesus, Fordham University New York City Public Schools (United States)
Abstract
Our students have tackled real-world challenges through projects such as designing sustainable urban gardens in science, writing policy proposals in social studies, and creating multimedia presentations in English Language Arts. These projects not only deepen content knowledge but also foster collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
Literacy is woven across all disciplines. In mathematics, students write reflective journals explaining their problem-solving strategies. In history, they engage in Socratic seminars and produce research papers. In the arts, students curate exhibitions with written artist statements. This cross-disciplinary approach ensures that reading, writing, and communication are central to every learning experience.
Equity and access are core to our mission. All students have the opportunity to enroll in challenging courses, including AP and honors classes. To support their success, we have implemented peer mentoring programs, after-school tutoring, grade-level advisory groups, and access to licensed counselors. These systems provide both academic and emotional support, fostering a culture of care and high expectations.
Attendees will leave with practical strategies to:
- Design interdisciplinary, literacy-rich projects that promote engagement.
- Build systems of academic and emotional support that sustain rigor.
- Foster a school culture where every student is seen, challenged, and supported.
This session is ideal for school leaders, curriculum designers, and educators seeking to transform their schools into vibrant learning communities that prepare students for the complexities of the modern world.
