The Future of (Art) Education: Instagram as Digital Gallery
Robert O. Slater, The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (United States)
Abstract
Instagram’s visual-centric architecture makes it an ideal "digital gallery" for art education. Unlike text-heavy platforms, Instagram prioritizes visual literacy, allowing students to engage with high-resolution imagery and short-form video content that mirrors the traditional studio environment.. The platform bridges the gap between formal schooling and the contemporary art world. Educators can use it to:curate virtual portfolios: Students can document their creative process through "Process Reels" and Stories, moving beyond just the final product to show technical development. It can also be used to democratize critique: By using specific hashtags, students can receive feedback from a global audience, bypassing traditional gallery gatekeepers and fostering a sense of digital participation. Finally, it can be used to access "behind-the-scenes" learning: Following professional artists allows students to observe studio setups, material choices, and the day-to-day realities of a creative career.
