Innovating Value Education in Primary Schools through Sport-Based Experiential Learning

Mojmir Kovač, Škid (Sports, Cultural and Educational Association) (Slovenia)

Abstract

Contemporary educational discourse increasingly emphasizes innovation in teaching and learning that supports not only academic achievement but also the development of students’ values, social competencies, and active engagement. This paper presents an innovative pedagogical model for value education in primary schools through sport-based experiential learning, with judo conceptualized as an educational methodology rather than a competitive sport.

The model is theoretically grounded in experiential learning theory and the educational philosophy of Jita Kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit). It integrates guided physical activity, cooperative learning tasks, and structured pedagogical reflection to foster core values such as respect, responsibility, trust, self-realization, and proactivity. Learning is understood as an embodied and reflective process, where physical experience is systematically connected to cognitive, social, and emotional learning outcomes.

Methodologically, the paper draws on qualitative insights from school-based implementations and teacher professional development contexts. The proposed framework includes curriculum-aligned lesson designs, reflective questioning strategies, and transfer tools that support the integration of experiential learning into everyday classroom practice. Reflective elements can be further enhanced through digital learning tools such as learning journals, guided prompts, and collaborative reflection platforms.

Findings from practice-based observations indicate increased student engagement, improved classroom climate, and enhanced inclusion. The paper argues that sport-based value education represents a sustainable and future-oriented innovation in education, offering a transferable model that complements digital teaching and learning while supporting holistic child development in primary education.
