Multiculturalism and Social Inclusion: Bridging Diversity through eTwinning and AI
Romina Marchesani, IIS Acciaiuoli-Einaudi Ortona (Italy)
Abstract
Vocational schools today serve increasingly diverse populations, including students from migratory backgrounds, learners with special needs, and those facing linguistic barriers. These challenges demand innovative approaches that transform diversity from an obstacle into a valuable learning resource.
eTwinning provides a powerful framework for promoting multiculturalism through authentic cross-border collaboration. My work with the eTwinning featured group on Multilingualism demonstrates how the platform creates communities where linguistic diversity becomes an asset. Through collaborative projects, students engage in purposeful communication that
validates their multilingual skills and cultural identities. eTwinning's flexible participation models accommodate diverse learning needs, allowing every student to contribute meaningfully, whether through visual arts, written work, or oral presentations.
Digital tools amplify these efforts significantly. Translation technologies enable genuine dialogue across language barriers, while multimedia creation tools provide alternative modes of expression for students with special needs. AI represents a paradigm shift, offering personalized learning support that adapts to individual paces and needs. AI-powered tutoring systems can identify knowledge gaps and provide targeted reinforcement, particularly
beneficial for students with interrupted educational histories. Advanced translation captures nuance and cultural context, enabling complex idea exchange across languages.
However, critical challenges remain. Digital divides can create new exclusions, AI systems may perpetuate biases, and we must ensure technology enhances rather than replaces human connection. Success requires investment in infrastructure, professional development,
and inclusive AI design.
The convergence of eTwinning's collaborative framework and AI's adaptive capabilities creates unprecedented opportunities for inclusive education. By thoughtfully integrating these tools, we can build educational communities where every student's identity is honored, individual needs are met, and all learners develop the intercultural competencies essential for thriving in diverse societies. This is not merely technological advancement, it is social
justice in action.
