Edward Shizha is Professor of Children and Youth Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford Campus in Canada Edward graduated with a Masters in Educational Foundations at the University of Zimbabwe and taught at the same university in the Department of Educational Foundations for 5 years before moving to Canada to pursue doctoral studies. In 2005, he completed his PhD in Sociology of Education in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta. Since then, for the last 16 years, he has been teaching in Youth and Children’s Studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. Edward has been an educator since 1981 when he qualified as a primary school teacher in Zimbabwe.

Edward is the series editor of Africa in the Global Space, a book series that is published by Peter Lang. To date, he has published 14 books and several book chapters and journal articles. Some of his recent book publications include Immigrant Lives: Intersectionality, Transnationality and Global Perspectives (2023); The dynamics of African indigenous knowledge systems: A sustainable alternative for livelihoods in Southern Africa (2022); and Living beyond borders: Essays on global immigrants (2018). Recent book chapters include “Black Lives Matter: Decolonizing whiteness in higher education academic spaces in Canada” (2024); “Social justice education in Canada” (2023), “Wastage of human capital? Underutilization of foreign- trained immigrant professionals and skilled workers in Canada” (2023) and “Stereotyping high school immigrant African male students in pursuit of postsecondary education in Canada” (2022).

Areas of expertise: Social justice in education, indigenous epistemologies, education of immigrant students, sociology of education, integration of newcomer youth. youth at risk, youth cultures.
