Shelley Xu

Shelley Xu is a Professor of Teacher Education in the College of Education at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), United States. She is literate in English and Mandarin. (She is learning Spanish.) She is currently the Director for the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization Program. Shelley has taught literacy, research, and technology courses in the doctoral, master’s, and teacher credential programs. She also taught TESOL courses in a summer school in Dankook University, South Korea.

Shelley’s research focuses on literacy instruction for English learners, early literacy instruction, preparing teachers for working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, and integrating various genres of texts and technology into literacy instruction.

Shelley’s book publications include single-authored Teaching English Language Learners: Literacy Strategies & Resources for K-6, as well as co-authored Literacy Instruction for English Language Learners, PreK-2, and Trading Cards to Comic Strips: Popular Culture Texts and Literacy Learning in Grades K-8. Her article publications have appeared in The California Reader, Journal of Literacy Research, Language Arts, Young Children, and Journal of Teacher Education. Shelley was the Essay Review Editor for Reading Research Quarterly, and she has been on the editorial review board for such academic journals as Action in Teacher Education, Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Educational Research, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Literacy Research, and Literacy Research Association Yearbook. Shelley has also reviewed book manuscripts for such academic publishers as Teachers College Press, Routledge, and Pearson.
