Brian Hibbs

Brian Hibbs, Ph.D., is an associate professor of education/ESOL at Dalton State College. He was previously assistant professor of Spanish at the same institution. He regularly teaches courses in applied linguistics, language teaching methodology, and culture and education. He also occasionally teaches courses in education to first-year students and pre-education majors. He was a lecturer in English for the Centro de Idiomas of the Universidad de Valladolid in Valladolid, Spain and also for the Institut d’Anglais Charles V of the Université de Paris VII in Paris, France. From 2017-2020, he was the director of the University System of Georgia’s Goes Global summer study abroad program to Madrid, Spain.

Dr. Hibbs received a B.A. in foreign languages, a B.S. in secondary education, and an M.A. in foreign languages from West Virginia University. He also received an M.A. in second language acquisition and teaching, an M.A. in language, reading, and culture, and a doctorate in second language acquisition and teaching from the University of Arizona. His dissertation explored the relevancy of children’s and adolescent literature in Spanish to elementary-level university students’ linguistic and cultural proficiencies.

Dr. Hibbs has presented at numerous regional, national, and international conferences. He has published several articles in such journals as the Journal of Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, Studies in Applied Linguistics, the Bellaterra Journal of Teaching & Learning Languages & Literature, and The Reading Teacher. He has also published three book chapters in such edited books as New Approaches to the Investigation of Language Teaching and Literature, Cultivating Critical Discourse in the Classroom, and Literary Imagination and Professional Knowledge: Using Literature in Teacher Education and has two forthcoming chapters in the following edited books: Reconceptualizing Language Norms in Multilingual Contexts and Antiracist Research on K-12 Education and Teacher Preparation: Policy Making, Pedagogy, Curriculum, and Practice.
