Ruth Von Borstel

Ruth von Borstel is a research assistant at OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Ruth graduated in 2022 with a Master's degree in Integrated Architectural Design from OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts. She received an award for outstanding achievements for her master's degree. Since 2022, she has been working as a research assistant in the field of Building Physics and Technical Building Services at OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Alongside various other projects, she has developed and implemented of the interactive self-learning and review platform “As U Know” for Building Physics and Technical Building Services, which supports students in incorporating complex building physics requirements into their creative and individual design processes.

In addition to her role as a research assistant, she has been working as a lecturer in the field of Contextual Design at OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2023.
Both during her studies and subsequently in research and teaching, Ruth von Borstel has focused on energy-efficient, resource-conserving, and circular building. In her master's thesis, she dealt intensively and deeply with the topic of urban mining in rural areas, both in design and life cycle assessment, critically questioning the evaluation of the existing building stock in standard life cycle assessment programs.

Alongside her studies, Ruth von Borstel volunteered for Heimstätte Dünne e.V., which carries out social and ecological building projects. After three years of participating as a construction assistant in projects, she served as the site manager for emergency social building renovations zusammen mit den Bewohnern und weiteren Baulaien of endangered residential buildings in eastern Hungary from 2016 to 2021. In addition to the social aspects, the focus was on building with the simplest means and methods possible and preferably with existing materials.
