Susan Oaks

Susan Oaks is a professor in the Arts & Humanities School at Empire State University, which offers the largest online program in the State University of New York system.

Susan has a Ph.D. in late 19th- early 20th-century American literature from New York University, an M.A. in American Literature from the State University of New York at Albany, and a B.A. in English and Secondary Education from Elmira College. She has been teaching with the State University of New York for many years, and has worked with site-based, international, organization-funded, and online programs that the university offers. She has been active in online (distance) learning since 1993, and has witnessed and participated in its evolution from early stages to the more seamless and sophisticated pedagogy and tools currently in use.

Susan has written 8 OER textbooks (Open Educational Resources). She has developed and consistently revises many online courses: College Writing, College Reading and Writing, Communication for Professionals, Proposal Writing, Effective Academic Writing, Technical Writing, Introduction to Literature, American Literature, and U.S. Multicultural Fiction, among others. She also developed and teaches a course in Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and has worked on competency-based prior learning guides and curricula.

Other publications include book chapters in Creative Tensions in Progressive Education: A Case Study in Challenge and Change (2017), The Field Guide to ePortfolio, AAC&U (2016), and The College Curriculum, Peter Lang (2013), along with numerous conference papers on online learning and course design, the teaching of writing, prior learning assessment, open educational resources, and integrating workforce and educational competencies.

Susan has received numerous awards for her work, including awards for innovation, teaching, and mentoring. She received a State University of New York Chancellor’s award for excellence in teaching, and a national Sloan-C/Online Learning Consortium award for excellence in online teaching.
