Giovanna Campani graduated in Philosophy (after a Master thesis in Philosophy, “History, Science and Sociology in Max Weber’ s Thought”) and got the diploma of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, Italy in 1974.
Between 1974 and 1976 she studied Sociology at the University of Zurich.
In 1977, she got a D.E.A. (Diplome d’Etudes Approfondies) in Sociology of Work at the Institut of Labour Social Sciences, University of Paris I (France) with a thesis on “Vocational Education in Italy, France and Germany”.
In 1988, she got a PhD. in Ethnology, University of Nice (France) on “Family, Village and Regional Networks of Italian Immigrants in France”.
Her professional profile was built in a multi-and-interdisciplinary field involving contributions from sociology, ethnology and education.
Between 1976/79, she received National Research Council fellowship by the University of Paris I and Paris VIII (France).
Between 1979 and 1981, she was Professor of Italian Language and Culture at the International Lyceum of Saint-Germain-en Laye (France).
In 1980-83, she was the Project Manager Institute F. Santi (France) for a three years research-project on the Italian immigration in France: “For a regional approach to the Italian immigration in France”; “Italian networks in France”; “Young people of Italian origin in France”.
From 1982 to 1986, she was Contract Researcher at the CNRS (Conseil National de la Recherche Scientifique), Paris, working on the projects “Identity and second generation”, and “Analysis of the reasons why young people of immigrant origin renounce to the French nationality through the article 45 of the Code of the Nationality”.
From 1986 to 1992 she was Lecturer at the University of Florence, Department of Education.
From 1994, Associate Professor and from 2011 Full Professor of Intercultural Education and Gender Anthropology at the University of Florence, Faculty of Education.
Retired from the University of Florence, she is presently collaborating with the University Pablo de Olavide, Seville Spain. She is teaching in the Master Course Gender and Equality and collaborating to European Projects.
She is founder and Honorary Director of the Journal- Comparative Cultural Studies, European and Latin American Perspectives.
I have been pioneer in the study of migration to Italy, publishing groundbreaking articles, as 1992: Un monde à part : les Chinois en Toscane, Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales, vol. 8, pp. 51-72 (with Lucia Maddii) and a book, “L’immigrazione silenziosa: le comunità cinesi in Italia,” published by the Agnelli Foundation followed in 1994.
