Mariana Fuentes Loss has a degree in Education Sciences, and Normal and Special Secondary Education Teacher (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina). She has a PhD in Psychology (University of Barcelona, Spain). She is a professor and researcher at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC).
Mariana participated in several research groups: at the University of Barcelona, in the consolidated group GRERLI: ‘Research Group of Linguistic Repertoire’ (participating in seven projects). She has also been a member of the consolidated and funded group APRELS: ‘Development, education and learning of deaf people and sign language users’ (participating in three projects, two of them European). In this last group, she has researched about deaf children’s strategies for performing mathematical operations and problems, and quantification in Sign Languages, comparing Catalan Sign Language with Spanish Sign Language and Argentine Sign Language. During this stage, she published several articles in the journals Sign Language Studies; Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education; Sintagma; Revista de Logopedia, Foniatría y Audiología and Cadernos CEDES. She has also published two book chapters. One of them was published by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the publishing house Tirant Lo Blanch.
In 2007, Mariana obtained a research contract in the Ramón y Cajal Programme, joining the Applied Pedagogy Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where she collaborated with a team researching about innovation in higher education, and another on inclusive education, participating in two projects at the national level, financed by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Ministry of Science and Innovation. She led research on multiplicative reasoning in deaf and hearing children. At this stage, she published in the journals Revista Iberoamericana de Educación and E-Learning Papers. A book was also published, by Octaedro publisher.
Since 2013, Mariana has been a professor in the Faculty of Education Sciences at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). She is a member of the consolidated research group Sustainability and Integral Education (SEI). She has co-led a project of Investigadors Novells and she has participated in several projects (ARMIF, DEMOC and CLIMA at the regional level, and in two European Erasmus+ projects, currently being principal investigator partner of one of them). During this period, she has published in the journals Sustainability, Opción and Revista Iberoamericana de Educación. She was also the co-author of two guides about Service-Learning for teachers. In the UIC, she has been the coordinator of the Special Education Mention for six academic years, coordinator of the psychology area for seven academic courses and co-coordinator of master’s degree Projects in the master’s degree in Psychopedagogy.
Mariana is a member of the committee of the University Service-Learning Network of Catalan Universities (APSUCAT).
In summary, Mariana has published eighteen journal articles, nine book chapters and three books. She has participated in twenty-two research projects obtained in competitive calls (three of them European); she has been Principal Investigator of two; she has presented more than forty communications in congresses and conferences, and she has carried out several research stays (Boulder, USA; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Olomouc, Czech Republic; Oxford, United Kingdom). National and Autonomous Agencies have recognized her twelve years of quality-research.
Her main lines of research are Teaching-Learning mathematics in deaf and hearing children; Linguistics of Sign Languages; Oral communicative competence; Service-Learning and Education for Sustainable Development
