Christopher Umenyi, University Lecturer,nnImo State UniversitynOwerri, Nigeria (Nigeria)

Abstract

In the past as well as in this recent time teaching of French as a foreign language has always been problematic due to the methods that are being used by the teachers of this language. In fact, our secondary school teachers hardly meet the internationally acceptable standards due to poor training and inadequate or misguided orientation. In addition, secondary school teachers lack the basic teaching skills. The schools on their part do not meet up with the basic amenities and infrastructural demands. The over-crowdedness of the classrooms and the frustration of ICT project, mare in no small measure the language learning process in Nigerian schools. The result of this situation is the production of half baked students ready to go into the tertiary education.

Thus, this paper intends to examine the methods of teaching French in some selected secondary schools in Nigeria with a view of proposing a way forward as well as sharing best practices that are in conformity with the international standards.
