Abstract
Motivation has been a focus of interest for the researchers (e.g. Brown, 2001; Dörnyei, 2001; Gardner, 1985) in the field of language teaching. Motivation study can be defined as; “the study of why people think and behave as they do” (Graham & Weiner, 1996 p. 63). It is an undeniable fact that motivation and academic achievement are in close contact with each other. The present study aims to determine the most effective motivating factors for ELT (English Language Teaching) and FLT (French Language Teaching) students. The participants of this study are a group of university students from a state university in Turkey. The participants are given a 20-item questionnaire form which was used by Vaezi (2008, adapted from Gardner, 1985; Clement et al., 1994) and was used by Başaran and Hayta (2013, adapted from Vaezi) to find out the ratio of integrativeness and instrumentality of participants’ motivation. The results of this study will contribute to teachers and teacher trainers in order to develop programs and strategies to motivate the learners toward learning a language.
