In RUDN University, there is a special 4-year “Translator” program working in every department. It is a language program which is specially aimed at teaching professional vocabulary and improving students ‘writing and speaking skills; it also teaches some theoretical bases of translating in English, other European languages, Arabic and Chinese. Besides, it includes numerous extra-curricular activities, such as round table discussions, festivals, concerts, etc. The goal of the program is to enable students to directly communicate with their foreign counterparts.
To show how the program works, we will brief the readers on the content of the English program for veterinary faculty students and show that learning a foreign language for professional purposes is highly motivating, which results in students’ acquiring both the necessary professional vocabulary and communicative skills in English. Moreover, they improve knowledge of the language in general, overcome psychological barriers to speaking and improve public speaking skills, which are revealed in their performance at students ‘scientific events.
