Abstract
The constant economic, educational and technological developments in the current globalised world make employability of graduates in the labour market as demanding as ever. In particular, ‘young people need a broad set of competences to find fulfilling jobs and become independent, engaged citizens who contribute to society. Education and training have a crucial role in enabling young people to develop these competences, giving them the best possible start in life.’ (Navracsics, 2019, p. 3). Hence, the role of education and higher education, in particular, has become crucial in developing those transversal skills (Hart et al., 2021) to deal with competitiveness and challenges faced in their future professions. Moreover, considering the vital role the English language plays in the professional world, it is of outmost importance that undergraduates attain and maintain a high level of competence in the language. The aim of this presentation is to initially discuss the importance of developing transversal skills in future graduates, how English for Specific Purposes courses in higher education can help develop these skills, as well as how technology can facilitate this aim in such courses and in future employees’ lives. The second part of this presentation will demonstrate how a specific ESP course in a Cyprus Higher Education State institution has been designed, structured and carried out in order to develop transversal skills in undergraduates, through the use of technology.
