Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed many sectors, including education. Integrating technology in language education is essential for meeting the varied needs of learners and instructors (Holmes & Tuomi, 2022). Notably, AI-driven large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI's ChatGPT offer significant potential to revolutionize English Language Teaching (ELT). ChatGPT combines advanced natural language processing with real-time, human-like interaction, reshaping EFL education (Wu, 2023). This study explores the multifaceted role of ChatGPT as a pivotal resource for ELT educators, focusing specifically on material development. The research adopts a two-fold design. Firstly, employing narrative inquiry, the researchers share their firsthand experience in utilizing ChatGPT to develop reading materials for foundation-level university students at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. This narrative offers practical insights and recommendations for educators interested in leveraging this technology, providing a practical framework for creating reading materials with AI assistance. Secondly, the study conducts an analysis of educators' perceptions regarding the use of ChatGPT in creating ELT materials in higher education. This analysis examines the strengths and limitations of ChatGPT through data collected via a questionnaire consisting of 10 multiple-choice and open-ended questions administered to university instructors at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. By examining this data, the researchers aim to identify the pros and cons of using ChatGPT for material development and provide educators with valuable insights on overcoming potential challenges. Based on the preliminary analysis of teacher responses, AI tools are generally perceived as moderately effective in creating educational content, suggesting a need for ongoing training and professional development to maximize the potential of AI integration in teaching practices. Additionally, content customization emerged as the most important feature of AI tools for creating ESL materials, indicating a strong preference for tailored educational resources.
