Explication of a National Culture in the Context of Foreign Language Learning and Teaching. The Case of Polish Experience

Magdalena Smoleń-Wawrzusiszyn, The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (Poland)

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to reflect on the development of Polish research devoted to linguistic markers/emblems of the Polish culture. The need for their elaboration has been pointed out particularly in the field of teaching/learning Polish as a foreign language, whose learners are increasing at an ever faster rate. Reference will be made to works published to date which have presented original research concepts or team projects - unfortunately none of the planned undertakings have either been started or, if started, have not been completed for various reasons. The paper briefly discusses these endeavours, highlighting the proposed approaches and methods, and the common denominator of these considerations is a very pertinent research question which so far has not been solved yet: ‘How to explain/present national culture for applied purposes?’. This question seems necessary and universal in the realities of a globalized world. The latest initiative on the subject will be presented as an attempt to break the current research impasse and the related lack of innovative proposals for the didactics of the Polish culture.
