Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the way we interact with technology, offering tools that can significantly enhance learning experiences. In the realm of language education, AI-powered tools are emerging as influential aids in improving grammar and vocabulary skills. This quasi-experimental research examines the influence of AI chat GPT on the mastery of grammar and the expansion of vocabulary among Iranian upper intermediate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Using a pretest-posttest control group design, a total of 40 participants were selected through convenience sampling and divided equally into two groups: a control group receiving face-to-face instruction and an experimental group receiving face-to-face instruction supplemented by AI chat GPT. The assessment tool utilized was a grammar and vocabulary test consisting of 40 items, with 20 items dedicated to assessing grammar and another 20 items evaluating vocabulary. Both a pretest and a posttest were administered to measure progress. The statistical analysis focused on t-tests, including both independent and paired tests, to compare scores within and between groups over the course of the 10-session treatment period. The instruction for both groups was delivered by the same instructor. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in the writing proficiency and vocabulary expansion of the experimental group, highlighting the effectiveness of AI chat GPT in supporting EFL education.
