Exploring Remote Learning Platforms in the Framework of the "New Normal": Obstacles and Challenges for Students in Higher Education

Abstract
The use of technology in distance learning in higher education has changed significantly in the post-pandemic, or "new normal" era. Educators employ several solutions to make remote learning easier, both during and after the pandemic. The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties and barriers that students encountered when using different distant learning platforms in post-pandemic and pandemic higher education. This study uses survey research involving as many as 420 respondents from different backgrounds and study programs at universities in the Province of D.I. Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The sampling technique of this study is a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The results of the survey show that 1) the majority of learning forms during the pandemic use the method of assignments, projects, papers, online presentations, discussions, and providing teaching materials or online practicum modules; 2) the form of learning media used during and after the pandemic is 81% e-book media, 81% multimedia (PowerPoint, Prezi, Kahoot, and Quizizz), 57% learning videos, and 54% sound recordings; 3) the asynchronous learning platforms used include 88% WhatsApp groups, 73% LMS (Moodle, Google Classroom, Edmodo, and Kelas Kita), 45% email, and YouTube. Meanwhile, most synchronous learning platforms use teleconferencing in the form of Google Meet, Zoom Meeting, Webex, and Microsoft Teams; and 4) The main obstacles and challenges that students faced both during and after the epidemic had to do with erratic internet connections, managing their time to finish multiple activities at once, and a lack of communication between teachers and students. To overcome these barriers and challenges, it can be inferred that effective communication and collaboration between instructors and students are necessary when choosing an appropriate platform for the use of remote learning in higher education during the post-pandemic or "new normal" phase.
