Barriers to ESP Implementation: Exploring the Disconnect Despite Decades of Development

Ouafa Ouarniki, Ziane Achour University of Djelfa (Algeria)

Abstract

Despite the early emergence of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the 1960s, its full implementation in educational systems, particularly in Algeria, remains inconsistent. This study investigates the reasons behind the limited application of ESP principles in the Algerian context, highlighting key obstacles that have persisted over decades. One significant barrier is the shortage of trained instructors proficient in both subject-specific content and language teaching. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive curricular frameworks that integrate ESP effectively poses a substantial challenge. Institutional support is often inadequate, with limited resources allocated for ESP programs and professional development. Furthermore, the resistance to change within educational institutions and insufficient funding for specialized training programs further impede the adoption of ESP. Aligning ESP with diverse disciplinary needs is another complex issue, given the varied academic and vocational requirements. To provide a comprehensive analysis of these barriers, we employed both questionnaires and interviews to gather qualitative data from Algerian educators and administrators. Through this mixed-method approach, we attempted to illustrate how ESP should be taught effectively. Key findings reveal the critical need for robust support systems, ongoing professional development, and curriculum innovation to overcome these challenges. By addressing these obstacles, stakeholders can enhance the integration of ESP, thereby improving language education and meeting the evolving needs of students in specialized fields. Consequently, this research contributes valuable insights and actionable recommendations for advancing ESP implementation in Algeria, ultimately fostering better educational outcomes and alignment with global educational standards.
