Abstract
The paper brings out the symbiotic relationship between regional language learning and ecological awareness, which can be developed through the medium of poetry. This study argues that the specific themes of nature used by Sugathakumari in her poetry augments the language proficiency and ecological consciousness of children. This paper explores how Sugathakumari connects nature, child, language and culture through her poems. Her Vedantic consciousness brings to her poetry an eastern philosophical consciousness which undergirds her poems. This study analyses the environmental poetry of Sugathakumari that not only serves to delight and enlighten children about their environment, but also their language and culture. This paper brings out the importance regional language plays in bringing out the concept of universal harmony embedded in the Indian psyche.
