Netspeak in FB: A Linguistic Analysis of Online Messages

Abstract
Online communication is a common form of writing nowadays. Thus, it is noticeable how people write their messages. Certain observable peculiarities in writing prompted the researchers to uncover the reasons behind the use of unique features such as the use of punctuation marks, capitalization, images, emojis, and word usage in the participants’ online messages. Specifically, this study aimed to disclose the linguistic forms found in online messages, the socio-pragmatic meaning of linguistic forms, and their implications in teaching. The researchers utilized Crystal’s (2001) online communication strategies along with sociopragmatics as the framework of analysis. The findings unveiled the use of Deviation, such as acronyms, abbreviations, and contractions, graphology such as emojis, punctuation marks, and numbers, and other lexical features such as formal and informal language. Online messages play a big role in the writing skills of the learners, it brings a new avenue for the learners to learn new words and new styles of writing. As such, these emerging ways of writing words, phrases, and sentences in online communication should be emphasized in language classrooms. In addition, teaching how to write in online communication, particularly on social media platforms should be given importance. Hence, by looking into the sociopragmatic meanings of the online language, teachers may carefully plan how these trends engage their learners in using it effectively.
