Exploring the Impact of ChatGPT on Enhancing the Writing Skills of Bangladeshi Undergrad ESL Learners

Ashiful Islam, Jahangirnagar University (Bangladesh)

Abstract

This study investigates the role of ChatGPT in enhancing the writing skills of Bangladeshi undergraduate ESL learners through an experimental pre-test and post-test design. Ten participants engaged with ChatGPT to improve their writing by receiving personalized, real-time feedback on grammar, structure, and coherence. The post-test results were compared to pre-test scores to evaluate improvement. In addition, the study collected qualitative data through surveys and interviews to understand learners' experiences and the challenges they encountered while using ChatGPT. The findings aim to shed light on the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT to transform ESL education, particularly in resource-constrained settings like Bangladesh. This research provides valuable insights into how AI can address gaps in traditional language learning methods and offers a critical evaluation of the practical and pedagogical implications of integrating AI into ESL instruction.
