Enhancing Listening Skills for Iraqi University Students with the Suggesto-pedia Method

Abstract

It is undeniable that the majority of Iraqi students learning English as a second language struggle with listening comprehension, which is a major issue for them. This essay attempts to provide some insight into suggestopedia. It is undeniable that the majority of Iraqi students learning English as a second language struggle with listening comprehension, which is a major issue for them. The purpose of this paper is to provide some insight into the suggestopedia teaching approach used in English language departments at the university level. The technique known as Suggestopedia is founded on the idea that constructive criticism can increase a learner's receptivity, which in turn can promote learning. It focuses on the several methods teachers use in the classroom to motivate students to pick up a new language.The significance of teaching Iraqi university students the suggestopedia approach to enhance their listening comprehension in the target language is examined in this study. Additionally, the study aims to determine how students feel about suggestopedia, particularly in relation to any fears or concerns they may have about the method.

This study was conducted experimentally in the second semester of 2025 on first-year English students at Imam al-Kadhim University College. According to the major conclusion, a sizable portion of students were able to describe their attitude toward the suggestopedia approach and think metacognitively about it. The researcher also found that it is possible to successfully train people to identify their preferred methods of learning and enhance their listening skills by practicing using suggestopedia and other tools.
