Generation Z Motivation to Study English through the Use of Visual Arts

Irina Sidorcuka, RISEBA University of Applied Sciences (Latvia)

Abstract

Generation Z, or digital natives, contribute to the major segments of contemporary students of HEI. As they were born in the era of technological advancement, their values, lifestyle, thinking patterns, and motivation are specific and vary from previous generations. The primary goal of this research was to   examine how visual arts as a learning environment and extrinsic instrument affect generation Z   students’ motivation and learning outcomes in Business English studies at RISEBA University of Applied Science. The study shares experience gained through combining several courses with multiple teaching aims thus creating an enriched integrated learning environment for the students in order to foster their motivation and learning outcomes. The research was longitudinal, carried out in the framework of the hybrid lectures course combining English for Professional Purposes(Business English), Personal Development  and Study Skills in the  academic years 2023-2024-2025.

The research sample was formed by 70 multicultural students; aged 18-24 years divided into 3 focus groups. The study is descriptive, including qualitative analysis based on interviews, observation of students’ involvement in the study process and reactions to the methods and environments offered, students self-evaluation, reflection and assignments, academic staff assessment of the effects produced by the project and panel discussion. The research shows that Gen Z is moving away from purely top-down text and assignment-based learning towards more interactive learning and teaching involving novelty, fun, excitement and aesthetics, critical thinking and analysis of personal emotional growth and creativity. Real time face-to-face exposure to visual arts works demonstrated a higher level of interest and emotional feedback than augmented reality presented by digitalized presentations of arts.
