Innovation in Language Learning

This presentation examines how Jorge Luis Borges' Another Poem of the Gifts can serve as a model for fostering inclusive language learning through creative writing, intercultural reflection, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Implemented in beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language courses during the Thanksgiving season, the lesson engages students in reading and analyzing Borges' poetic expression of gratitude before composing their own "poem of thanks" in the target language. While inspired by the North American tradition of Thanksgiving, the activity expands the concept of gratitude beyond a single cultural celebration, inviting students to reflect on the people, experiences, languages, and communities that have shaped their identities. Grounded in inclusive language education, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and reflective practice, this instructional approach promotes linguistic development alongside empathy, creativity, and intercultural competence through close reading, collaborative discussion, vocabulary building, and guided writing. The presentation will showcase classroom materials, representative student work, and practical strategies for adapting the activity across languages, proficiency levels, and instructional contexts. By demonstrating how literature can serve as a catalyst for personal expression, inclusive dialogue, and meaningful cultural engagement, this session offers an accessible, low-cost pedagogical model that integrates language acquisition with equity, belonging, and cultural awareness. Participants will leave with adaptable, classroom-ready activities that promote meaningful communication while supporting inclusive and culturally responsive language teaching.
