Cognitive Biases in Processing Information Structure Among Native and L2 English Speakers

This paper investigates how native English speakers and non-native learners (Czech and Slovak cohorts) process information structure, focusing on Jan Firbas’s Functional Sentence Perspective and the gradual scale of Communicative Dynamism. While English grammar relies heavily on a fixed Subject-Verb-Object order, FSP principles generally anticipate that the most dynamic element, the Rheme Proper, will appear at the end of a clause. To understand how readers navigate this structural tension, this study analyzes empirical survey responses to modified text excerpts from Harry Potter and the Goblet of FireThe methodology inherently relies on cross-linguistic comparison and translation; parallel English and Czech texts were modified to preserve core communicative elements while ensuring a one-to-one structural correspondence.

The quantitative and qualitative data reveal that both native and non-native cohorts struggle significantly with following the elevation of a context-independent subject to the communicative peak, which violates standard SVOA grammatical expectations. The data highlights several recurring cognitive traps and subjective processing patterns:

The Lure of the Action: Readers frequently default to semantically rich verbs rather than identifying the Rheme Proper, allowing semantic weight to hijack objective FSP structure.

The Setting Trap: Aligning with Wallace Chafe’s cognitive activation theory, readers use pre-existing pragmatic knowledge of the narrative to inadvertently elevate familiar, background settings to rhematic status.

The Subject Trap: When a thematic Bearer is front-loaded and carries heavy descriptive weight, respondents incorrectly interpret thematic starting point as the peak of new information.

Hierarchical Parsing: Based on Aleš Svoboda’s framework, respondents actually excel at parsing complex syntactic hierarchies, proving that syntactic complexity alone is not the primary catalyst for misinterpretation. Reader divergence is primarily driven by semantic interference within hierarchical layers rather than structural density.

This study demonstrates that while readers can override linear modification under specific conditions, pragmatic context and subjective cognitive biases frequently overwrite FSP parsing. These findings help bridge the theoretical divergences between Firbas’s context-bound FSP, Halliday’s positional syntax, and Chafe’s cognitive frameworksBy pinpointing exactly where and why L2 learners misinterpret information structure, these findings provide insights for language teaching strategies, helping educators design targeted interventions to improve advanced reading comprehension, syntactic awareness, and writing instruction for non-native speakers.
