George Ypsilandis is an associate professor on CALL, Second Language Acquisition and Teaching and Learning Theories at the department of Italian Language and Literature of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He holds an M.A from the University of North Wales, Bangor (UK) and a Ph.D. (Bangor, UK and Aristotle, Gr) in Applied Linguistics.
Ypsilandis published several articles in Greek and international journals, such as, the 1994 proceedings of the British Association of Applied Linguistics, CALL, World Englishes, Journal of Applied Linguistics, Revista de Linguistica y Lenguas Aplicadas and Language Learning in Higher Education, Association for Language Testing in Europe (ALTE) in the areas of CALL, Language Testing and Contrastive Rhetoric. Some of his articles are cited in books and articles published in the USA, Europe (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain, UK) and the Far East (Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan). He presented papers in conferences in Greece, Italy, UK, USA, France, Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Austria, FYROM, Hungary, Cyprus, Serbia and Saudi Arabia. Ypsilandis was awarded a visiting professorship in the years 2012 from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia (151-200 in the world rank of universities), and in 2014 at the Katholic University of Eichstaat-Ingolstadt (Germany). He acted as a teacher trainer for Oxford University Press in Greece, Italy, Cyprus, UK and Albania. Ypsialndis has also worked for almost two years as a consultant for Oxford University Press and an ESP teacher at the University of Macedonia and the Technological University of Thessaloniki. He has been a keynote in several occasions in Greece, Italy, Albania and Spain and an ad hoc referee for papers submitted to Language Awareness (published by Multilingual Matters, Clevedon, U.K.) and the Compiegne (France) conference on CALL.
Ypsilandis was the EUROCALL representative in Greece from 1998 to 2013 and organized a conference on ESP and IT at the University of Macedonia (year 2000). He used to run a one-year (250 hours) teacher training course on CALL (the first in Greece) for 5 years while at the University of Macedonia. In 2007 he designed the educational scenario and internal structure of an on-line distance teacher training course which received the European Label Award for innovative projects in language teaching and learning of that year. Finally, he coordinates a Master on Technology in Language Education run from 2014 at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece).
He takes pleasure riding his bicycle to work every morning through the Thessaloniki peer enjoying the sea and the sun and a fine ale on his way home. He is often going skiing and cycling in Oberstdorf (Germany) a place he considers a second home. He lives part time in Wien (Austria).
