Phd Studies in Armenia: Reforms and Results

Abstract

The author of article discuss the reforms that took place in the Post Graduate Studies System (Aspirantura) of the Republic of Armenia due to the requirements of the Bologna process. The current situation and problems of the Aspirantura, as well as inconsistencies in the education legislation that hinder the development of this sphere are analyzed. The author presents the experience of Germany and Denmark on how to organize PhD education and analyze the compliance of PhD curricula in Armenia with the Salzburg principles. A number of recommendations, legislative and organizational changes are offered for reforming Armenian Aspirantura in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna process.

The paper presents also the establishment of the European and Russian scientific degree awarding systems. We consider the scientific periodicals, activities of USSR Supreme Certifying Commission.  Within the framework of the Bologna process we discussed the main requirements for entering to modern western doctorate and defense of scientific thesis. It is proposed to maintain the two-level degree-awarding system in Armenia. On the basis of international paramount practices, in the article is suggested ways to improve the system of postgraduate education in Armenia. In particular, it is considered urgent transition from graduate school system in a doctoral program, taking into account the harmonization of training and research components of the Armenian and European post-graduate training programs. For this purposes, suggests ways to improve the legislation of Armenia's higher education system.
