Abstract

According to a number of researchers, the concept of self-regulated learning today is becoming a focus of educational theory. More and more choices and responsibilities of modern students depend on their academic and professional development. Modern higher education is increasingly approaching a student-centered approach, where learners are an active subject in the learning process and should take personal responsibility for their development as well as to self-assess their individual progress. This study focuses on exploring opportunities through project-based learning (PBO) conducted with STEM to support students in the process of developing learning skills and self-regulated learning. The study encompasses 88 medical students and 30 pharmacy students placed in authentic scientific and practical problems. The design of project-based training is applied in a collaborative work provided for the exercises and extracurricular activities. The subject of the study is parasitology training, focusing on the development of learning skills and the formation of professional skills and competencies. By STEM students investigate and give proposals for control of different parasitic diseases thus becoming aware of the significance of biological knowledge for their practical needs.
