Abstract

The aim of this paper is to give insights into innovative approaches towards teaching university-level subjects, such as cultural studies. The secondary aim of his paper is to show that there are also teaching methods and approaches that can be used to teach this or similar subjects and that these methods are applicable not only to teaching English language. A survey was made of university students from the Department of English Language and Literature who attended a regular course during one semester. Apart from interactive lectures, where students were actively involved in acquiring the content of the course, students wrote reflective journals about the ways they had acquired knowledge from the lectures. The research collated the students’ reflective journals and assessed them through the use of rubrics. The rubrics’ results revealed which strategies the students used and precisely which one helped them the most to acquire knowledge. The results show that students used five types of leaning strategies. At the end of the course, students filled in questionnaires revealing that the innovative approach being used within the Cultural Studies course had helped them to link knowledge from other courses, such as the literature and civilisation course.

Keywords: teaching methods, teaching approaches, reflective journals,  assessment, rubrics.
