Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to develop, validate and evaluate a Collaborative Lesson Planning (CLP) model for preservice and in-service science teachers’  during teaching internship. A concurrent nested mixed method was employed to gather data via survey questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. Preliminary survey and interview data revealed that preservice science teachers (PSTs) found lesson planning highly challenging when done individually. Experienced mentors noted that PSTs lack content and pedagogical knowledge due to interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected their confidence. However, they possess strong collaboration skills, which the author identified as a solid foundation for developing the model. Using this baseline data, the CLP model was developed from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The model was validated by seven science education experts prior to implementation, while the evaluation was conducted by the implementing PSTs and their cooperating teachers afterward. Validation of the CLP model indicated its appropriateness and feasibility in terms of context and flow, ease of interpretation, and adherence to the implementing rules and guidelines of the Philippine teacher education curriculum (CMO No. 75, s. 2017). Evaluation, on the other hand, resulted in four themes: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of implementing the CLP model. In conclusion, the CLP model was found a good opportunity to enhance teachers’ learning, reflective practice and to build a community of learners.
