Perceptions Related to the Educational Objectives Necessary for Shaping a Culture of Biodiversity in a Transdisciplinary Approach

Claudia Marian, Cluj Napoca Technical University (Romania)

Abstract

Shaping a culture of biodiversity involves promoting a deep understanding and respect for the planet's biological diversity, with the goal of protecting ecosystems and the species that compose them. It requires changes in education, public policies, and social and economic behavior to ensure a balance between human needs and nature conservation. Achieving these goals calls for a holistic understanding of biodiversity and the human-nature relationship, through the integration of knowledge from various fields of study. This study aims to analyze how young people—students in specific fields of ecology and those in related or distant areas of study—perceive the educational input (study objectives) necessary for designing educational programs aimed at fostering a culture of biodiversity. The objectives considered include those related to theoretical knowledge and scientific understanding, the development of skills and competencies, the formation of attitudes and values, engagement and action, and the cultural and ethical dimension. The results obtained indicate a few trends: one emphasizing the objectives related to engagement and action across all specializations, coupled with a tendency to select those objectives that are close to the specific study goals of one's own field, as well as an underestimation of the necessity of acquiring knowledge and scientific understanding of the mechanisms involved. All of this suggests that the crossing of disciplinary boundaries for the formation of a culture of biodiversity is still in its early stages, and that the informational integration of the involved fields is an objective in itself.
