Abstract

Since 2025, Shukutoku University has adopted digital textbooks for information-related subjects. Among these, for the data science course “Statistical Analysis,” we have developed an original digital textbook. This textbook was designed to enable students to start learning from a “zero-base” level, with carefully written explanations, extensive use of figures and tables, and clear video tutorials. It emphasizes an applied learning approach by incorporating hands-on practice with tools such as Excel and Tableau, aiming to bring students to a stage where they can actually perform meaningful data analysis. A particular focus is placed on “data visualization.” Through visualization, students are not only able to conduct analysis but also to communicate their results more effectively. In addition to Excel and Tableau, the textbook encourages the use of open data platforms such as e-Stat and RESAS, allowing students to visualize data in tables and graphs. Beyond visualization, students are trained to interpret the characteristics of the data and to articulate their findings in written and verbal forms. This combination of digital textbook design, interactive tools, and open data utilization provides a comprehensive framework for cultivating both analytical and communicative competencies, which are essential in contemporary data science education.
