New Perspectives in Science Education

Dr. Georgios Mavromanolakis graduated from the University of Athens with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and a Master’s Degree in Nuclear and Particle Physics. He specialized on detector development with novel technologies and techniques in the field of experimental particle physics where he holds a Ph.D. awarded by the University of Athens. He conducted his doctoral research at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva-Switzerland, working on the development and design of a tungsten/quartz-fiber calorimetric detector, which is now in operation at the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. From Aug 2003 until Jul 2008 he was Research Associate at the High Energy Physics Group of the University of Cambridge, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge UK. As member of international scientific collaborations he worked on the research and development of innovative calorimetric detector technologies for next generation high energy physics experiments. He led the various phases of the R&D programmes, from conceptual design and computational simulation of detector systems, to preparation of testing of prototypes, experimental operation and data analysis. He conducted experimental test campaigns at various research accelerator facilities at DESY/Hamburg-Germany, CERN/Geneva-Switzerland and Fermilab/Chicago-USA. While being employed by the University of Cambridge he was awarded the International Fellowship of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in USA to continue his research as Guest Scientist of the Division of Experimental Physics Projects (from Jan 2007 until Jan 2009). From Mar 2009 until Dec 2011 he joined CERN as Research Scientist/Fellow working on the research and development of novel scintillating crystal materials with applications in the fields of particle physics, medical imaging and homeland security. Also as a member of the CMS Collaboration he participated in the data analysis of the experiment and in the upgrade studies of its detectors. In 2012 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Cyprus where he taught at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and at the Department of Physics. In Sep 2012 he joined the Research and Development Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi as senior researcher and manager of projects on science, technology and education funded by the European Commission.
