Joan M. Esson is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Otterbein University located near Columbus, Ohio, USA. Joan graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1994, and earned her Ph.D. from The University of Michigan in 1999 specializing in Analytical Chemistry. She then completed a postdoctoral research position at Penn State University, where she also worked as a General Chemistry Instructor. Joan then became an Assistant Professor at Kalamazoo College, and moved to Otterbein University in 2007. Joan teaches General and Analytical Chemistry. She has an active research laboratory and has conducted research with over 50 undergraduate students. In addition, Joan is interested in recruiting and retaining STEM students. She has obtained four National Science Foundation grants that pertain to curriculum development, assessment of student learning, and development of programs to enhance student retention. Joan has led national workshops on service-learning in chemistry, and was recently invited to contribute a chapter to a book on flipped learning.
