Martin Musumeci

Martin Musumeci graduated Bachelor of Education [Chemistry] (1981), Bachelor of Science [Chemistry and Physics] (1991), and Masters in Business Administration (2001) from the University of Malta. He successfully concluded a post-graduate course in Chemistry Research Techniques (1983) at the University of New South Wales, Australia and a Doctorate in Chemistry (1995) at the University of Padua, Italy.

He taught (mainly Physics and General Science) in various Secondary Schools as from 1981, and Chemistry and Physics (in 1985) at the Higher Secondary School. In 1986, he started teaching Advanced level Chemistry – and later the ‘Man and Science’ component in Systems of Knowledge too – at Sixth Form Level.

Musumeci joined the Academic Division of the MATSEC Support Unit, University of Malta as Principal Subject Area Officer (PSAO) for Sciences in July 1999. He was seconded (2000–2002) as Assistant Director for the Diagnostic Science Laboratories (DSL) and Coordinator for Science of the then Malta Centre for Restoration (MCR), where he was a key player in the setting up of the DSL, in the preparation of new Conservation courses, in the teaching of a number of chemistry-related study units and in various conservation project teams. In 2002, Musumeci returned to the MATSEC Support Unit as PSAO (Commercial and other Subjects) and became an academic member of the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technical Education, Faculty of Education. He continued as Visiting Lecturer for the Conservation degree course and was appointed Visiting Lecturer for a number of Institute of Health Care courses. He held the post of Executive Director MATSEC for the period 2008–2012, after which he returned to the his substantive post within the Faculty of Education. He is currently Senior Lecturer (in Chemistry and Science Education) and the Head of Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Faculty of Education at the University of Malta.

Musumeci is a Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (UK). Formerly, he was also an active member of the Association for Educational Assessment-Europe. He authored a number of academic publications and presentations in international conferences, and participated in a number of EU-funded projects.
